What is A Hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a technique to properly and adequately observe and evaluate any pathology inside the womb with the use of a fine, narrow telescope. The procedure may be done under general, local, or spinal anesthesia.
D & C stands for dilatation (to open) and curettage (scraping) of the lining of the womb. The main reason for this procedure is to sample the lining of the womb to check for abnormal tissue and/or evaluate the lining for the status of hormone effects in case of infertility.
The combination of hysteroscopy and D & C are being utilized together to evaluate any abnormalities inside the uterus.
Your procedure will be scheduled as an out-patient procedure in an Ambulatory Surgery Unit. You will be instructed to be in touch with out-patient surgery several days before the day of the surgery to arrange for preoperative consultation with a member of the Anesthesia Department and for laboratory (blood and urine) tests. There is no need for any enema or shaving. Please DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT. Report to the surgical unit two hours before your scheduled time.
PROCEDURE
After proper identification and gowning, an intravenous fluid will be started and adequate sedation will be given to you. The procedure will be performed in the Operating Room. After completion of your procedure, you will stay in the Recovery Room of the surgical unit for several hours until you are able to return home. Please arrange to have someone drive you home.
AFTER PROCEDURE
Aside from the sedation, there would be very minimal after-effect to this procedure. Pelvic discomfort should be very minimal. Occasionally, there is a need for mild pain relievers such as aspirin or Tylenol. You should expect some vaginal spotting for 3-4 days on and off after the procedure. Preferably, a pad should be used for protection. Please refrain from any sexual activity until you follow-up visit, which should be within two weeks.
