What is Laparoscopic LASER Surgery?
This is a technique that requires special training and experience Operative laparoscopy with the use of various types of LASER, is a newer style of surgical procedures, employed for the treatment of various diseases of the reproductive organs. Traditionally, surgery of the pelvic organs had been done through the use of a "Long Incisional" approach, which was done on an in-patient basis, using general anesthesia, necessitating 3-5 days of hospital stay and requiring 3-6 weeks recovery time away from work and regular activities.
Unlike the above procedure, operative LASER laparoscopy is done on an ambulatory (out- patient) basis, under general anesthesia and requires 3-4 very small (one quarter inch) incisions. As a result, the patient usually experiences less post-operative pain and a speedier recovery time- shortened to 5-7 days.
The following are some of the procedures that can be performed with the use of this technique:
- Removal of tubal pregnancy
- Excision and removal of ovarian cysts
- Vaporization (melting) of pelvic adhesions (scars) surrounding the ovaries, tubes uterus and bowels
- Opening of obstructed fallopian tubes
- Excision, vaporization and removal of pelvic endometriosis
- Excision, vaporization and removal of fibroid tumors of the uterus
- Excision and removal of tubes and/or ovaries or both
Patient selection is quite important as not all patients qualify for this type of surgery. Depending on your past medical and surgical history, you will be advised regarding the advisability of using this technique for your surgery.
