Preconception Information

Your preconception health is important. Not only does practicing healthy habits prior to pregnancy provide a safer growing environment for a growing baby, it helps you remain more comfortable and active during your pregnancy.

  • Practice health eating habits. Make sure you meet your nutritional needs, eat wisely and identify if you have any special nutritional concerns (do you...take medications/supplements, follow a strict vegetarian diet, exercise strenously or run long distances and even follow a reducing diet).
  • Keep fit. Being active before pregnancy will help make you more comfortable during pregnancy. You may continue many forms of exercise and sports throughout much of your pregnancy. Consult with your doctor for more specific guidelines and pay attention to signs of overdoing activities. Pregnancy is not a good time to take up a new, strenouous sport.
  • Stay away from possible hazards. Chemical exposure from your job or hobby can be harmful to a developing fetus. X-rays should be avoided if possible. Cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs can affect a growing fetus. Although medical experts cannot state exactly how much or what is the most harmful to your gowing baby, do remember that whatever goes into your body also reaches your baby's bloodstream.
  • Discuss any special concerns you may have with your doctor: Medical conditions you have that may put extra demands on your pregnancy, genetic diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, Rubelland and other vaccines, genetic diseases.

Remember:  It is never too soon to start healthy habits.
